The Longest Day is a team event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. Held annually on the summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Teams are encouraged to create their own experience as they fundraise and participate in an activity they love to honor someone facing the disease. In this article, we feature one of our younger Longest Day participants, Myla Roundy.

I am Myla, I’m 11 years old, and I love to play my alto saxophone. I also really love to cook and bake! I have previously been in a cooking competition. I have been in my schools speech contest and made it to the top 10! I have participated in a lot of my school clubs including Environmental Club and S.T.E.M.

How did you come to be involved with The Longest Day?
My personal connection with Alzheimer’s disease is that my grandmother had Alzheimer’s. Even if times were low she didn’t let anything get in her way and she would always fight through it and that makes me really proud of her! I became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and The Longest Day through my mom. She currently works at the Alzheimer’s Association.

What activities have you done for The Longest Day?
The activity that I did for the Longest day was “Myla’s Pop Up Bakery.” I offered three items: Oreo Truffles, Peanut Butter Brownies, and Sweet Potato Pies. I really enjoyed participating in The Longest Day because it gave me a challenge. I was able to raise over $600 for The Longest Day.

Why is participating in The Longest day important to you?
It is important to me to participate in The Longest Day to help raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s because a lot of people aren’t aware of it.

Why do you think others should participate in The Longest Day?
I think others should participate in The Longest Day not just for awareness but also for the experience! You can do whatever type of event you want. For instance, I did a Pop Up Bakery and my dad did a motorcycle ride (The Longest Ride).

Personally I wouldn’t change anything except for one thing, which is to have more kids involved! The more kids the better, because kids talk about everything. If one kid tells another kid something about The Longest Day, and that kid tells their parent, and that parent tells their friend etc. you have a long evolution of The Longest Day getting more popular!

Participate in 2016 Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Survey

Last year, a record number of Illinois residents participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Annual Illinois Survey. The survey results were used to successfully pass legislation in Springfield to take Illinois a step closer to becoming dementia-capable. This year is different as Alzheimer’s care and support services teeter on collapsing.

Illinois is in a financial crisis and services for those affected by Alzheimer’s have been cut and even eliminated. We must do all we can to protect these services.

Please participate in the 2016 Survey and help us fight for the 220,000 Illinois residents living with Alzheimer’s.
