When Linda Lee Goldman’s mother developed Alzheimer’s disease, she left her home of 40 years and moved into a series of care facilities.
“In these facilities I found an extreme lack of meaningful art for older adults,” said Goldman, an art therapist, artist and educator from Northbrook.
Goldman used her expertise and passion to change that, creating groups where residents could express themselves and engage. Her experiences are also what have led her to participate as an artist in “Unforgettable Art: An Affair for Alzheimer’s”

Hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association® Greater Illinois Chapter, the event is celebrating its 10th year. This ever-growing fundraiser features 50 talented artists who will transform canvases to works of art while patrons, sipping cocktails and enjoying hors d’oeuvres, look on. Attendees will then have the opportunity to bid on the unique pieces at the end of the night.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013. For the first time, this year’s event will take place at Chicago Rockford International Airport, 2 Airport Circle, Rockford.
“The airport terminal is something different this year, and it’s exciting because the airport is a big part of Rockford,” said Sharon DeDoncker, a volunteer who sits on the Unforgettable Art planning committee and has been involved with the event since its inception.
Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door. VIP tickets, available in limited numbers, are $75 and include early entry with a meet-and-greet with participating artists, preferred seating at the live art auction, a gift bag and souvenir wine glass. All proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter in the Rock River Valley.
“Fundraisers can be pretty stuffy, but this event isn’t stuffy at all,” DeDoncker added. “It’s just a really fun time.”
