Join the Greater Illinois Chapter Junior Board

The Alzheimer’s Association® Greater Illinois Chapter is currently seeking new members to join its Junior Board. This group of civic-minded young professionals in their 20s and 30s is dedicated to raising awareness of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
“I sought out the Junior Board because I was looking for a group that provided both fundraising and hands-on service opportunities to benefit those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers,” said board member Andrew Levy. “The Junior Board provides trips to an assisted living facility in Lincoln Park, fundraising happy hours and various other opportunities such as volunteer staffing for the Association’s Walks to End Alzheimer’s.
Some who serve on the board have lost a loved one, some have watched a friend suffer, and some have been caregiver — but all are united by a desire to see an end to Alzheimer’s disease.
“It has been good to know friends facing similar issues and it helps focus the board on its objectives,” Levy added.

When Linda Lee Goldman’s mother developed Alzheimer’s disease, she left her home of 40 years and moved into a series of care facilities.
“In these facilities I found an extreme lack of meaningful art for older adults,” said Goldman, an art therapist, artist and educator from Northbrook.
Goldman used her expertise and passion to change that, creating groups where residents could express themselves and engage. Her experiences are also what have led her to participate as an artist in “Unforgettable Art: An Affair for Alzheimer’s”

Hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association® Greater Illinois Chapter, the event is celebrating its 10th year. This ever-growing fundraiser features 50 talented artists who will transform canvases to works of art while patrons, sipping cocktails and enjoying hors d’oeuvres, look on. Attendees will then have the opportunity to bid on the unique pieces at the end of the night.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013. For the first time, this year’s event will take place at Chicago Rockford International Airport, 2 Airport Circle, Rockford.
“The airport terminal is something different this year, and it’s exciting because the airport is a big part of Rockford,” said Sharon DeDoncker, a volunteer who sits on the Unforgettable Art planning committee and has been involved with the event since its inception.
Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door. VIP tickets, available in limited numbers, are $75 and include early entry with a meet-and-greet with participating artists, preferred seating at the live art auction, a gift bag and souvenir wine glass. All proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter in the Rock River Valley.
“Fundraisers can be pretty stuffy, but this event isn’t stuffy at all,” DeDoncker added. “It’s just a really fun time.”
To purchase tickets or for more information, go to unforgettableart.org or contact Jennifer Ratkovic, Manager, Special Events, at 815.484.1300 or jratkovic@alz.org.

Be a voice for those affected by Alzheimer’s

Be a voice for those affected by Alzheimer’s

We are asking for your participation in the Illinois Alzheimer’s Disease State Plan 2014 Survey. The online survey, which takes 10 minutes to complete, is live now and will close April 10. Questions focus primarily on the State of Illinois’ services and programs for those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Your responses are critical as they will provide information and direction for an updated Illinois Alzheimer’s Disease State Plan. The multi-year plan puts forth recommendations and strategies to address this healthcare issue. It is a vital document for those with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, their families and their caregivers. By state statute, the plan is updated every three years, with the next update scheduled to be delivered to the General Assembly early in 2014.
The survey results will be shared with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the state’s Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Committee. Results will also be available for all to view at alz.org/illinois.
Please be a voice for those affected by Alzheimer’s and take the survey today! >>

In the four years since Kay Haubenreiser began volunteering, she has logged a staggering 663 hours to further the aim and reach of the Alzheimer’s Association® Greater Illinois Chapter. Her tireless commitment was borne of personal experience.
“My mother (Nancy Mangelsdorf) had vascular dementia for 14 years and we were thrown into a world we didn’t understand,” Haubenreiser said. “All the support the Alzheimer’s Association offered was tremendous.”
In her role as a volunteer, Haubenreiser has made countless phone calls to nursing home facilitators and directors of nursing to inform them of professional development offerings in the area of dementia. She has spoken with those in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease to let them know about education programs and performed outreach to faith communities so that clergy can learn more about the Association’s resources for the benefit of their congregations.
More recently, Haubenreiser has written pieces on driving and dementia and how to enjoy the holidays when someone is cognitively impaired, among others, for Connections, a newsletter for those with early-stage memory loss. She also underwent training to become an Alzheimer’s Association Community Representative (AACR). AACRs assist the Alzheimer’s Association education team by presenting brief programs and representing the Association at health fairs and other events. Those in the role also speak to organizations, schools and clubs about the mission, programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“Being an AACR means you are tapping into a lot of opportunity in the community,” Haubenreiser said. “People are really looking to connect on this issue.”
In recognition of National Volunteer Week, April 21 to 27, the Greater Illinois Chapter would like to thank Haubenreiser as well as all our volunteers for their years of truly wonderful service.
