Illinois Alzheimer’s Disease State Survey: Please Complete

The Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center (CNADC) has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to survey Illinois residents about state programs and services that support those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias.

By participating in the annual Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Survey you will provide greater understanding about the challenges faced by those living with dementia, their caregivers, and loved ones as well as help shape state policies addressing the critical needs of those impacted. This online survey, which takes only 10 minutes to complete, will close Friday, May 16.

Through the CNADC, the Alzheimer’s Association, and other partners, the answers you and hundreds of others share in this second annual survey will be presented at conferences, shared with the media, included in government testimony, presented by volunteer advocates to their elected officials, and used to highlight the challenges in dealing with Alzheimer’s disease in new ways. Last year, the survey analysis was used to inform recommendations in Illinois’ new Alzheimer’s Disease State Plan, presented in testimony to the Illinois House Human Services Committee, distributed to the public health community throughout Illinois by the Illinois Public Health Association, and shared with numerous agencies and organizations serving the aging population in our state.

We need to hear from you! Please share your experiences and views on the State of Illinois’ services and programs for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. The importance of your input cannot be underestimated.

Soon after the survey closes, you will be able to find the complete results by visiting the website for the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter, alz.org/Illinois.

Thank you for your support!

Honor a special mom this Mother’s Day – Alzheimer’s disease

Honor a special mom this Mother’s Day – Alzheimer’s disease

My mother, Tish Smith, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at age 62. Shortly after, she enrolled in a clinical trial and that experience gave us hope for a cure.
That’s why my husband Clay and I have agreed to donate up to $800,000 to the Alzheimer’s Association’s research and New Investigator Research Grant program (NIRG) if the Association raises the same amount by Ju?ne 15, 20?14.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I hope you’ll honor a special mother by making an urgently needed gift today.
My mother was an active Southern lady who could accomplish more in 24 hours than anyone I’ve ever known. But within four years of her diagnosis, she no longer knew her family and spent her last six years in a vegetative state.
I promised her that I would never forget what Alzheimer’s did to her and our family and pledged to do everything I could to make a difference.
My mother used to say that life was about family, faith and giving back. Clay and I feel the same way. We support the Alzheimer’s Association because we’re excited about the hope that we can offer to families facing Alzheimer’s in the future – hope that wasn’t available when my mother was diagnosed.
Imagine what we can do together if we fight to change the course of the disease! And if you give by June? 15, your tax-deductible gift could go twice as far in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Please join us – if we all do our part, we can make a difference.

Pet therapy can be beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s

Spending time with pets can serve as a brain-stimulating activity for people with Alzheimer’s. One example is a New Mexico man with the disease who briefly regained the ability to speak after interacting with the family dog. A video posted by the man’s daughter has over 4 million views on YouTube.
