Evidence suggests Alzheimer’s disease may begin years before symptoms occur

Sandy Halperin was likely around 35 years old when his brain began slowly accumulating the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s. By age 60, when Halperin started to lose words and forget his intentions, the disease was already advanced. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN chief medical correspondent, writes that thanks to recent advances that allow us to see the disease in the living brain, there is evidence of Alzheimer’s in neural tissue 20 to 30 years before someone may notice lapses in memory.

Tell presidential candidates to make Alzheimer’s a national priority.

We are one year away from an election that has the potential to change the trajectory of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Please sign this petition and urge presidential candidates to address the Alzheimer’s epidemic.
We need to make dramatic progress in the coming years to achieve the Alzheimer’s Association vision of a world without Alzheimer’s disease, and to do so the next president must make Alzheimer’s care, support and research a priority.
Alzheimer’s is a fatal disease with no survivors. More than 5 million Americans currently live with the disease, and that number is expected to rise to 7.1 million by 2025. As America’s most expensive disease, nearly one out of every five Medicare dollars is spent on Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

I urge the next president to:
Formally address the Alzheimer’s disease crisis.
Encourage his or her party to make Alzheimer’s a critical issue in their platform.
Build upon the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease and grow or initiate state Alzheimer’s plans.

Sign the Petition

The next president must take a stand in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Sign the petition today.

Invest in a future without Alzheimer’s disease

Invest in a future without Alzheimer’s disease
With your help, we’ve made significant progress in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Every day, the Alzheimer’s Association provides care and support to people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers — while fueling innovative research that will lead to methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure.

Help us put a stop to Alzheimer’s disease.
Right now, Alzheimer’s disease can’t be prevented, cured or even slowed. That’s why we urgently need your support.
Since 1982, the Alzheimer’s Association has awarded over $350 million to more than 2,300 scientific investigations, funding cutting-edge research that is leading toward new approaches to treatment. But to take these studies even further, and to continue providing support to people living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, we need your help.
Your donation will support our mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
Please take action today by giving to the Alzheimer’s Association. You’ll help provide resources for people living with Alzheimer’s disease today, while investing in the hope for tomorrow.

End-of-life care places greater financial burden on people with dementia

End-of-life care places greater financial burden on people with dementia

Health care and caregiving costs for people with dementia in the final five years of life are more expensive than people with cancer, heart disease and other illnesses, new research suggests. The study found that costs such as government spending, private insurance and out-of-pocket expenditures for people with dementia were 57 percent greater than those associated with death from other conditions.
