Event gives voice to people with Alzheimer’s

Joan Baker wanted to be a humanitarian, but one thing always got in the way. She didn’t know where to direct her altruism, which of the countless causes out there she was meant to embrace and support. Then her father, James P. Baker, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
“When he passed away, I knew I wanted to do something,” said the Brooklyn resident of her father, who died from complications of the disease in 2003 at the age of 80. “I was bound and determined.”

Gov. Quinn signs update to Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Act

The Alzheimer’s Association® Illinois Chapter Network commends Gov. Pat Quinn’s signing of Public Act 97-0768, Monday. The act renews Illinois’ commitment to public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.
This act is an update to the Alzheimer’s disease Assistance Act, an initiative of the Illinois General Assembly. It includes revised definitions and statistics to reflect current knowledge of Alzheimer’s incidence as well as the disease’s prevalence and the needs of persons with Alzheimer’s as well as their families and caregivers.

New discoveries revealed at International Conference

This year’s Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® (AAIC), which took place July 14 through July 19 in Vacouver, Canada, hosted scientists who have made incredible advances in the field of Alzheimer’s research and treatment. Throughout the week, researchers shared different lifestyle factors proven to cause cognitive decline, called attention to new tests that aid diagnosis in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, presented possible treatments for the disease and much more.
