Research is the key to understanding Alzheimer’s disease and the brain

Alzheimer’s, while devastatingly common, is still widely misunderstood — many people don’t realize there’s not yet a way to stop or slow the progression of the disease. Alzheimer’s Association President and CEO Harry Johns writes that we need a better understanding of the brain in order to one day effectively treat and prevent Alzheimer’s, and research is the only avenue to a better understanding of brain health and the disease.

Charity Miles enables people to earn money for charity simply by walking, running or biking. Walkers and runners earn up to 25 cents per mile, and bikers earn up to 10 cents per mile, all courtesy of corporate sponsors. Please download Charity Miles to your iPhone or Android today and start walking, running or biking to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Charity Miles is a free iPhone/Android app that enables individuals to raise funds for charity simply by walking, running or biking. Launched a little more than a year ago, the app quickly became a fitness favorite, and winner of several awards, including the SXSW People’s Choice Award and Women’s Running Magazine’s Best Overall App, and earned recognition by Men’s Fitness as one of their Game Changers of The Year.

Walkers and runners can earn 25¢ per mile, and bikers earn 10¢ per mile to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, all courtesy of Charity Miles’ corporate partners who sponsor the miles, such as Timex Sports, Humana and Lifeway Foods. The app’s more than 100,000 users log in, work out, and share that they’ve been active and raised funds for their favorite charity through social media. Get the emotional support you need

Now that the holidays are over and winter had set in, you may find yourself struggling with your role as a caregiver more than ever. Attending a support group can help so you don’t feel as if you’re facing things alone. Plus, you can learn tips and techniques for dealing with difficult circumstances from other who have been through it. The Greater Illinois Chapter offers more than 80 support groups in our service area.

Get the emotional support you need

A support group is a regularly scheduled in-person or virtual gathering of people with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, family, friends or caregivers who interact around issues relating to dementia. Groups can have social,
educational and/or support components and are facilitated by individuals who have received training from the Alzheimer’s Association. This information is provided as a resource but is

University of Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon has designated the Alzheimer’s Association as his charity for the Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge. The challenge features the nation’s top men’s basketball coaches counting on fans to vote for their favorite charities. The winning coach’s charity will receive $100,000, so vote daily.
